Home Buyer Questions For Our Retirement Plans

by Robert
(Pleasanton, California, US)

I am retired and my wife and I are finding our home too large to continue to maintain it. We both would prefer to have something smaller now, which will also free us. We enjoy travelling, but we have never ventured too far. We both feel ready to move and even considered possibly relocating to a new area. We have lived here for 38 years and we are not sure what we should look for in a smaller home to see us through.
What can you suggest will be important to consider in our new purchase.

Hello Robert,

Your home buyer question is not an uncommon one. As more and more of the population is approaching retirement or are already retired, there are a number of issues related to their decision to downsize their home and better cope for whatever reason in their quest to find the best places to retire. Probably the most important features to consider finding your next home is the proximity to conveniences, such as doctors, local shopping and public transport, be within easy walking distances from the home that personally fits your current and future needs. There are more and more Senior Retirement Centers and Villages being constructed all over the country and around the world. There are costs and certain restrictions attached with these and you should be well informed before making any decisions. Alternatively, Condos or Home Units are popular, these usually have a management scheme attached to the maintenance and insurance, again in multiple living schemes. You may also be mindful that they may not be exclusive to retirees, and may also be investment properties which are rented - This may be less desirable and important to consider also. With large and older properties becoming demolished and land sub divided, you may also consider seeking a new Homettes built, which can be less restrictive and more independent against the managed style properties.

Best Wishes
